As usual we started this hike too late. We parked the car at the Meglieglia cable car parking lot and were at the top of Mont Lema around 1pm. The last ride of the cable car was at 5pm, which was a little too early for us, and we wisely simply decided to follow the trail to Monte Tamaro and ignore how we would get back to the car. The hike is really magnificent, with view over the Lugano and and Maggiore lakes, and the trail constantly running at the top of the mountain connecting the Lema and Tamaro peaks. But inevitably came the moment, once arrived at 5:30 pm at the top of Monte Tamaro, to consider how to get back to the car. The last cable car from Monte Tamaro to the valley had already gone so we had simply no choice but walking back… After going thru all the vegetation changes between the 2000 m of the peak and the 800 m of the valley we arrived at Mugena when it was almost dark and still 7 km to go to get to the car, with 8 hours hiking already behind us. Hitchhiking was our only chance and a very nice fellow, a retired policeman , gave us a ride to the parking lot. This guy has been for X years with the anti-drug corps of the Swiss police, and he told us a lot of funny stuff about his work. And we are still not sure how to interpret his answer to the question about what his two sons do for living: “they are hunters” he told us…
